Memories of Migrations and Historical Time – Conference

Deadline: 25 March 2012
Open to: all interested, but doctoral students and early career-researchers are particularly welcome to hand in a paper
Costs: speakers’ travel and accommodation expenses will be fully covered

Description

For the past thirty years, memories have become a recognized field of inquiry in historical studies and the social sciences. Within this
framework, migrants have a particular place: in France, they have been actors of these memorial mobilizations but have not always done so on behalf of their origins. Thinking of memories of migrations – in the plural – enables us to consider both emigration and immigration but also the different categories of migrants regardless of their status.

It is important to reflect more generally on the role played by memory in the history of migrations since the nineteenth century, especially regarding the formation of group identities and the establishment of transnational and diaspora networks. This conference aims to stimulate reflection by focusing on five main, albeit overlapping, areas.

  • Event, temporalities and transmission
  • Geographical territories, social spaces, mobilities and levels of analysis
  • Identities and multiple belonging
  • Symbolic policies and heritage
  • Historians of immigration and memories of migrations
Eligibility

Call is open for all working and/or interested in these topics. However, submissions by doctoral students and early career researchers are particularly welcome.

Application

Proposals for papers should be sent in French or English (Word format or as an rtf attachment) to following address: colloquememoires@histoire-immigration.fr. Proposals should include a title and abstract of 3,000 characters (450 words), as well as your contact details (surname, first name, post and institutional affiliation, email and (home) postal addresses, telephone numbers) and a short biography. Final papers should be submitted at least three weeks before the conference to be read in advance by the discussants. Several types of proposals will be particularly welcome: those favouring a long-term historical analysis across the centuries; those considering mobility between social or geographical spaces; and finally, those developing a comparative perspective between country of origin and receiving country. More widely, this interdisciplinary conference embraces all proposals incorporating an epistemological reflection.

Deadline for submissions: 25 March 2012

Conference Committee makes final selection of papers: May 2012.
Deadline for written conference papers: 31 October 2012.

Speakers’ travel and accommodation expenses will be covered by the conference organizers; further details will be sent out in June 2012.

The conference is organised by the Cité nationale de l’histoire de l’immigration, in partnership with the research centres Framespa (CNRS / Université Toulouse-Le Mirail) and Citeres (CNRS / Université de Tours).

The full-length Call for Papers can be read here.

The world has been negotiating during your whole life to slow the environmental damage caused mainly by humans. Despite some good news on many fronts, there is still a lot to do – climate change, deforestation and over-consumption of finite resources are just three of many environmental problems which have accelerated over your lifetime.

Today’s decision makers are faced with the consequences of previous generations’ decisions and actions. You will be faced with the consequences of today’s decisions.

Eligibility

The contest is open to citizens of the 32 EEA member countries, Greenland and 7 West Balkan cooperating countries. The EEA member countries include the 27 EU Member States, together with Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland, Turkey. The entry can be in any of the official languages of the countries of eligibility. However all submissions must be subtitled in English, should they be in another language. Entries submitted without translated subtitles will be disregarded.

  • 3rd place: €1000 and plaque
  • Buzz Prize winner: plaque

The selection will be made on the basis of the number of Likes on the specially-designated website. In the case of two videos both having the same number of votes, the EEA pre-selection committee will have the final decision.

The individual recipients of prize money will be responsible for the tax implications of their winnings.

The winners will be notified by email therefore it is crucial to provide correct contact information. Due to the potentially large volume of videos submitted only those shortlisted will be notified.

“ToTrain is ToTransform the Future”, Training of Trainers in Intercultural Learning, Belgrade, Serbia

Deadline: 1 March 2012
Open to: Youth workers, Trainers
Venue: Belgrade – Serbia, 21-30 April 2012

Description

The Training for Trainers in Intercultural Learning “ToTrain is ToTransform the Future” is focused on developing competences of youth workers to act as trainers, focusing on intercultural education and work in intercultural settings, by using the richness of experiential learning and non-formal education in general.

The organisation in charge of the project is “The Youth Dialogue Programme (YDP)” who has emerged from the initiative of young people from Serbia and Kosovo at the beginning of 2005, with the aim of reviving the interrupted cooperation between young Serbs and Albanians after the conflicts in 1999. The main focus of the Youth Dialogue Programme is intercultural dialogue and understanding, together with the empowerment of young people, especially the ones coming from marginalised and vulnerable groups. The organisation is dedicated to facilitating dialogue and intercultural learning of those who are separated by deep-rooted conflicts. From the experience of the organisation in this field came the realisation that there are only few youth workers/trainers who are truly capable to facilitate delicate ICL learning processes that go beyond one session required to be implemented in every international event.

The main goal of the project is to increase capacities of youth workers to promote and facilitate intercultural education as trainers and facilitators.

More specific objectives are:

  • To increase the level of knowledge of youth workers in ICL topics (culture, identity, prejudices, stereotypes, discrimination, communication, etc);
  • To develop competences of trainers in non-formal education focused on designing and facilitating Intercultural learning and to put them in practice with young people in Belgrade;
  • To empower youth workers to act as multipliers of Intercultural learning;
  • To develop practical skills in intercultural education and “awareness making” in their own communities;
  • To encourage participation and involvement of young workers in social processes;
  • To develop sense of common responsibility for the future of their local communities from a global perspective;
  • To introduce Youth in Action as a great provider of intercultural educational opportunities for young people.
Eligibility

The target audience are youth workers (aged 18 and above) that work in intercultural settings and need to develop in-depth skills as trainers in intercultural education. Previous training experience is desired, but not necessary.

There will be 26 participants in total and youth workers from following countries are invited to apply: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Iceland, Italy, Macedonia, Montenegro, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, UK, Turkey.

Costs

This project is funded by the Youth in Action Programme. According to its rules, all costs of board and logging will be covered by the organisers. In addition, the Youth Dialogue Programme is going to reimburse 70% of the participants’ travel costs, upon the receipt of all original tickets and invoices.

ECMI Internship Programme

Deadline: ongoing
Open to: all interested
Allowance: the internship is unpaid, travel costs cannot be covered

Description

The ECMI’s Internship Programme has operated since the establishment of the Centre. ECMI (European Centre for Minority Issues) considers it a very important part of their mission to offer young scholars an opportunity to experience the real world of international research and project work. Internship positions are considered part of the educational work, making sure that participants have an opportunity to expand their academic knowledge as well as to fine-tune their practical skills.

The ECMI is an international institution, which works closely with the Council of Europe, the OSCE and the High Commissioner on National Minorities as well as with the European Commission and national governments throughout Europe. Working language is English. In addition to research and project work, ECMI also runs an extensive publication programme, trainings and a summer school. Interns will be able to participate in all aspects of this work.

The Centre also co-operates directly with a number of research institutions around Europe as well as with the two universities in the region, Flensburg University and the University of Southern Denmark. Interns will have an opportunity to visit these universities and use some of their facilities. For more on these co-operation partners, click here.

The Programme recruits four times a year.

The ECMI regional offices are included in the Programme.

Participants are invited to specify in their application which Research Cluster or Regional Office they wish to be considered for.

Position

As an ECMI intern, you will participate in the research and administration of the ongoing ECMI projects, under the direction of the responsible Head of Cluster or relevant ECMI researcher. Interns participate in all the activities of the Centre, and an excursion to visit the minority institutions in the region is offered once during each internship period.

You will also have the opportunity to work on your own research in agreement with your supervisor and under his or her guidance. A work plan setting out goals and objectives as well as specific tasks is usually drafted at the beginning of the internship.

Intern positions are normally full-time, but part-time is also possible in agreement with your supervisor.

The internship positions are unpaid and the ECMI is not able to cover travel expenses.

There is a possibility to remunerate some interns through the Flensburg Stadt Fellowship. This provides accommodation in an apartment supplied by the Flensburg Town Hall for interns of lesser means.

Application

Application by electronic mail only; no phone calls please. A letter of application with the reference “Internship programme”, accompanied by a curriculum vitae, the names, contact details (including e-mail addresses) of three references, and an unedited writing sample in English (an extract of maximum 5 pages from a research paper not edited by someone else), should be sent to Maj-Britt Risbjerg Hansen under following address: hansen@ecmi.de

Please specify when you would be available and the area you are interested in. Incomplete applications are not taken into consideration.

You will be contacted after an initial review and asked to provide academic/professional references in case you have been shortlisted.

Student Conference in Maribor 2012

Deadline: 25th of March 2012
Open to: students under the age of 27
Costs: travel costs are not covered

The history of the Student Conference in Maribor reaches back in 1996, under a different name at that time. A few years later it got the new name and image as it has today.

Approximate number of participants has been increasing, and a few years back reached 100. At that time, most participants came from the countries of former Yugoslavia, but in the last three years the number of participants moved to around 60, which is almost half as much as a few years ago.

Every year, there are approximately 15 different countries represented from all over the world, which gives SCiM an international and intercultural touch. For example, in 2008, when SCiM celebrated its 10th anniversary, theoretical and practical workshops were based on intercultural dialogue.

In 2009 we looked for creativity and innovations for there were only creative workshops. On the other hand, we found out that participants still wanted debates and lectures on topical issues. For this reason we decided to reintroduce theoretical parts: there were 6 of them, connected to the subject matter of poverty and social exclusion. These themes were also related to current student issues, such as scholarships, youth employment, student work, poverty among youth, youth and politics.

This year’s conference will take place between the 22nd of June and the 2nd of July. During these ten days of SCiM 2012, you will have the opportunity to be active in different workshops. This year’s topic is connected with the European year of active ageing and solidarity between generations.

More info about the workshops here.

Eligibility

Students from all around the world are welcome to apply. Applicants must not be older than 26.

Sharjah Art Foundation Production Programme 2012

Deadline: 24th of February 2012
Open to: artists working on projects with relevance to the MENASA region
Grants: a total budget of 200,000 $

Description

The Sharjah Art Foundation (SAF) Production Programme broadens the possibilities for the production of art in the MENASA region by supporting innovation and excellence in artistic practice, encouraging risk and experimentation. The Foundation offers grants and professional support for the realization of projects selected from an open call for proposals.

Eligibility

SAF welcomes visual art proposals from artists, collectives and collaborating groups. These collaborations may be between visual artists and choreographers, composers, filmmakers, writers, curators, theorists or other professionals working in fields such as science or philosophy.
You should be able to free yourself from any commitments that could hinder the production of your project, should it be selected.
Proposals can be made for any kind of media, including time-based media, installation, sculpture, artist books or performance. While we have not set a specific theme or criteria, we are looking for work that relates to or that can be of relevance to the Middle East North Africa South Asia (MENASA) region. This should not be taken in a strictly literal sense, but rather as an opportunity to undertake an ambitious project with a broad philosophical or inspirational approach. SAF is seeking for proposals that can engage or challenge the artists and our audiences on a variety of levels, whether aesthetic, intellectual or political.
The project must be a new project in the phase of preparation and its production time frame should not exceed 12 months.

Application

In 2012 SAF is offering production grants to artists working in a range of media including sculpture, installation, time-based media, artist’s books and performance. Up to a total of $200,000 is available in this application cycle. The success of a proposal will be determined by merit rather than budget. To this end, projects with budgets that range from modest to ambitious scales will be considered. The submission deadline is 24 February 2012 and selections will be announced in March. The selected projects will be developed and produced by the artist and the Sharjah Art Foundation, with presentation of the completed project as agreed between the artist(s) and SAF.

Access the application form, the collaborator form – in case the project is a collective effort -, and the  captions form here.

PLURAL+ supports young people’s expression of their opinions by providing them with a variety of media platforms and distribution networks, including broadcasts, video festivals, conferences and events around the world. PLURAL+ not only provides young people with an effective platform to express themselves on key migration and diversity issues, but also reinforces the firm belief of IOM and UNAOC that youth are powerful and creative agents of social change.

Multiple youth may work together to make one video, as long as all members of the group are between the ages of 9-25.
Other people involved in the making of the video (e.g. educators, teachers, instructors, etc.) might be over 25 as long as their creative role is minimal (group coordination, technical support, renting equipment, etc.)

April 25 – April 30th, 2012 in Alexandria, Egypt – Second stage

Description

The first online course entitled, Euro-Arab Youth Collaboration for a More Sustainable World took place in 2011. This course met once a week for 2 hours and consisted of a total of 25 European and Arab youth.

The participants learned about sustainability issues, community leadership and the Earth Charter. Specifically, they were asked to define their visions for a more sustainable world and articulate the type of a role they would like to play in their own communities to help solve the current challenges they face. The course was a great success since by the end each participant prepared and presented a project that they wanted to implement within their communities. Some of them have already started to put their projects into practice within their contexts.

Due to the success of the first online Euro-Arab Youth course, Earth Charter International has partnered with Shift Network (Euro-Arab Youth Initiative) to offer a second one entitled “Euro-Arab Sustainability Leadership Youth Forum – Moving Beyond Just Tolerance”.

The problems of today’s world are more complex than ever, they are highly interconnected and interdependent. We face climate change, vast exploitation of natural resources, population growth, growing gap between rich and poor, and social inequity, among many other challenges. To be able to respond to these challenges future leaders need a new and innovative interdisciplinary approach.

The course will be offered in two stages:

The first stage will take place online for 4 weeks, once a week for 2 hours, and the second stage will take place in Alexandria, Egypt where the same participants will meet each other face to face and present their final projects on how to create a more peaceful, sustainable world through intercultural dialogue, using the Earth Charter as an ethical framework.

Stage One

The first stage will take place online through Earth Charter International’s online platform, which will provide an interactive, creative and innovative space for the participants to work together.
This stage will consist of 4 sessions and the projected start date is February 28th, 2012.

COURSE DATES:
February 28th — Session one: Getting to know the Earth Charter using Donella Meadow’s ‘Visioning’ Approach
March 6th — Session Two: Intercultural Dialogue | Intercultural Communicative Competence
March 13th — Session Three:  Sustainable ways of living
March 20th — Session Four: Planning for Sustainable Action Projects

The second stage will take place from April 25 – April 30th, 2012 in Alexandria, Egypt, where the participants and relevant organizations will meet each other and be able to present their final projects to each other and engage face-to-face with one another.

Alexandria was chosen, because it is home to the infamous Alexandria Bibliotheca and therefore an ideal place for young people to come together, share knowledge and carry on with their intercultural dialogue.

Approximately 100 people are projected to be invited, this includes the thirty youth participants as well as fifty more organizational representatives who will also be invited to join the participants in Alexandria.

The training ”Mentors Adventure in EVS Land” is organized by the NGO BalkanIDEA (Novi Sad) and will take place in Sremski Karlovci, Serbia, from the 10 to 18 March 2012.

The main themes of the project are mentoring of EVS volunteers and more specifically the role of mentor in guiding the volunteer through self-directed learning, supporting his/her ICL process and providing him/her emotional support. Apart from the residential training course, for the preparation and follow up of the training the on-line platform will be used in order to facilitate further learning and support of the participants. The on-line platform will be very important in visibility and dissemination of results of the project, as it will be open to all interested organizations and individuals in the follow up stage of the project.

The E-manual will be created during the project. It will be based on the outcomes of the training, focusing on the main themes explored and will give added value in promotion and dissemination of results of the project.

The role of mentor is very important, if not crucial, in supporting the volunteer in his/her learning process, adaptation to the local environment and for personal and emotional support. SALTO-YOUTH recognised the need for training and on-going support for mentors in their every-day work with volunteers. Therefore the overall aim of the project is to ensure the quality of future EVS projects implemented in partnerships with organisations from EU, SEE and EEC countries.

Specific objectives are:

  • To build capacities of 24 mentors for leading the EVS volunteers through the process of intercultural learning, giving them emotional support and guiding their self-directed learning.
  • To provide space for partnership building between organisations from EU, SEE and EEC that would lead to new EVS projects.
  • Capacity building of mentors that are supporting the volunteers through the process of learning, emotional growth and interculturality will result in implementation of higher quality EVS projects. Consequently, this will lead to the creation of support systems within the organizations that are open for and capable to deal with EVS challenges.

By increasing intercultural sensitivity of mentors they are becoming capable to guide EVSers through their ICL processes in order to open them for cultural diversities and enable understanding between young people in different countries.

Through possibility to work on particular EVS projects during TC and by creation of an online platform the ground for long lasting partnerships at the European level will be set. Review of Amateur Film – RAF 2012

Deadline: 20 February 2012
Open to: Amateur and student filmmakers
Prizes: 500 euros

Description

The Review of Amateur Film – RAF is a film festival happening at the end of March in Zagreb and it has been imagined as a program that includes the presentation of amateur, student and non-professional films from around the world without any kind of selection. Also, it is the meeting place where authors can meet each other, mingle, promote themselves and their movies and have a lot of fun. The first RAF was held in 2002. There is only one simple reason why it was decided not to have a selection: everyone who invested their energy and created something must have the chance to present their work and energy in public. The audience is the one and only jury. With a spontaneous contact, ideas are being exchanged, films are being commented on, and you also get some feedback and arrange new projects. Immediacy, erasure of the artificially created threshold between professionals and amateurs, organization and audience, is very important.

After celebrating the 10th anniversary they decided to shake things up and introduce an official student competition. For the student competition  the rules are changing a little bit. There will be a preselection of the films applied, but also there will be a award of 500 euros for the best film in the student competition.

This is the eleventh review and it will be held from March the 19h till March the 25th in &TD theatre, Zagreb, Croatia.

They decided to make this move because they see a need for student films to be presented in Croatia where in an abundece of festival there is none that focus solely on student films. Even with this new goal, their previous ones have not changed – they still want to show as many films as they can and have a lot of fun while doing so.

Long story short: besides the standard categories of amateur films that enter the competition without selection, this year there is also a category (introduced on last years’ RAF) which includes films that are made by students of drama/film/fine arts academies.

Amateur and low budget-films:

  • Short films: films up to 20 minutes duration
  • Kids & Teens: movies author (s) and up to 14 or 17 years of age
  • Middle meter: films up to 60 minutes duration
  • Feature film

Student competiton:

  • Films up to 30 minutes duration are accepted
  • Festival entries are open to all students in film schools, academies or universities. No high school entries.
  • All films/videos submitted must subtitled in English (if not spoken in English)
  • Films must have been made as a student work while filmmaker was a student at a recognized educational/film institute
Prizes

The best film in the student competition will be awarded with 500 euros.

Eligibility

The call is open to all amateur filmmakers, as well as all students in film schools, academies or universities. No high school entries.

All sorts of genres are accepted (see application form) and as long as you follow all the rules, it’ll work just fine. Films must be made in 2011. or 2012., only one film per author is accepted, so if you’ve been productive lately, you’ll have to choose the best one.

Application

Application form is HERE, you have to fill it with information and send it to our e-mail RAF@REVIJAAMATERSKOGFILMA.HR along with the picture or screenshot from the film.

Film in MiniDV or DVD format with application form have to be sent to the following address no later than 20th February 2012.

Theatra – a quest for fresh, high quality, independent artistic expression

Author: Ruzica Despotovska

“First of all, this is the only private theatre in the country, possessing its own premises completely focused on the independent theatre forms of any kind (regarding plays selection, elaboration of subjects and ideas, composing and deduction of conflicts, ideas processing etc). In terms of the artistic development, Theatra strives to raise the standards of the theatre production and to bring back the audience in the theatres.”

Theatra is a recently formed, independent theatre, formed by a group of young people. Through this short interview, with the producer, Maria Zafirova, we present its formation, members and the main ideas.
Could you tell me who initiated the idea of Theatra (Skopje, Macedonia), who were the creators and the founders of the theatre and how was the entire organisation?

Theatra was born as a result of the necessity for free and, at the same time, unique artistic expression. The main initiator was Marija Zafirova, a producer, and the idea was spread to Biljana Radinoska, the director of Theatra. Moreover, the initiative was accepted by Natasa Petrovic, an actress, and Magdalena Dilevska, a graphic designer. It was planned for the new theatre to be opened with Biljana`s diploma work, the play Misanthrope by Moliere. The entire project was led by Marija, who succeeded to obtain a performance space and to form a team of co-workers (a costume designer, graphic designer, marketing manager and dramatist). The premiere of Misanthrope took place in April, 2011, and so, Theatra was opened. Later, the team expanded with three more members: a web designer, a programmer, and a writer. The credit for this successful assembly of creative people goes to Marija, in addition to the entire team`s will for revival of a new theatre collective as well as a brand new theatre.

1. What makes Theatra so different and unique, what are the principles and the standards that it follows and its direction of development regarding the theatre artistic development?

First of all, this is the only private theatre in the country, possessing its own premises completely focused on the independent theatre forms of any kind (regarding plays selection, elaboration of subjects and ideas, composing and deduction of conflicts, ideas processing, etc.). Another unique aspect about Theatra is the way it promotes the events i.e. the marketing process. That includes 24/7 updating of the site www.theatra.org, as well  as the Facebook page  www.facebook.com/Theatra, in addition to the everyday communication with the audience, responsibility for distribution of promotion materials for the performances which usually takes place on the streets of the city, the square and all the locations in Skopje. All this provides an intensive communication with the spectators. In terms of the artistic development, Theatra strives to raise the standards of the theatre production and to bring back the audience in the theatres.

2. Could you mention some additional data, in terms of theatre projects that already took place, who is responsible for them and also about the possibility of becoming a member of the team?

The first Theatra project was the comedy Misanthrope by Moliere.  A group of young and thoroughly devoted actors formed the acting team and instantly charmed the audience. The play covers a lot of the current issues such as: false friendships, love relationships only to meet one`s own interests, hypocrisy, etc. It gives a clear picture of the world we live in today. Misanthrope participated on two theatre festivals: Impact in Veles and Kultura in Stip. During the summer, two theatre workshops were organised “Me, An actor” and “Me, Who”. That was a chance for those who are not professional actors to reveal their acting potential and to work according to classical and experimental methods. By the end of the summer and the beginning of September, the second greater project was launched, the play Zvukot na koskite sto se krsat (The Sound of the Breaking Bones). It is performed according to a text written by the Canadian writer Susan Lebo and it presents a sphere of the Macedonian theatre which has not been reached and covered until now. It is a story about the disorder and the horror as a result of the tribe wars in Africa. The play is part of the theatre’s repertoire on Wednesday at 21.00. The tickets for all performances till now have been sold. All the projects are led by the producer Marija Zafirova. On the profile of the theatre collective of Theatra, you can notice that everyone who is familiar with what is happening in Theatra, or the theatre they represent, can be involved in a project. The premises of Theatra are also used for already composed performances and play participating as hosts with the ultimate goal to form as many contacts and links as possible between the people of both theatre and artistic world.

3. How was it like to be part of MOT (Mlad Otvoren Teatar-Youth Open Theatre trans.), considering the fact that the theatre was recently formed? How did you manage to carry “the burden” of the opening of the 36-th edition of MOT?

The fact that we have become part of a successful story as well as part of the Macedonian theatre history is a great honour for an independent theatre. I would also have to add that it is not very common for a theatre of this calibre to host the opening of a highly important and great event such as MOT.  We didn`t even feel “the burden” which was a wind at the back for Theatra. Our theatre has matured and evolved relatively swiftly considering the dramatic expression and the freshness carrying within itself. In terms of production, director, actors, costume designer, and music, Zvukot na koskite sto se krsat (The Sound of the Breaking Bones) is much alike other MOT plays as well as the performances on a world level.

4. Last but not least, your future plans and expectations?

Next, we plan a drama studio and one more premiere by the end of the year. The vision of Theatra is, by every following project, to reconstruct the theatre beams in order to find autonomous and inspiring forms. Regarding organisation, Theatra strives to develop more successful system and in terms of creativity, it inquires and tells stories in an effortless manner. When you cook, plan your holiday, or read a book, you follow a certain system or a plan all the time and, at the same time, you feel an impulse that maintains the excitement and helps you to encircle, disassemble, and reconstruct that system. That is exactly what Theatra is trying to do: to keep the zest all the time.

The Euro-Mediterranean Academy for Young Journalists in cooperation with the Swedish Institute in Alexandria, Egypt invites young journalists from different media outlets (print, radio, tv, online, photojournalists) to participate in the third Euro-Mediterranean Academy for Young Journalists in Alexandria, Egypt from April 22nd 2012 to May 2nd 2012.

Born in 2007 at the Euro-Mediterranean Youth Parliament in Berlin, the first Academy was carried out in Jordan in 2008 with the support of the Goethe Institute and the Anna Lindh Foundation. This experience was brought forward in 2009 when the second edition of the Academy was implemented in Amsterdam. Today, EMAJ brings together more than 50 young journalists from both sides of the Mediterranean.

EMAJ mainstreams a new quality of news making through its intercultural webzine  – an online hub for feature-based and culturally sensitive journalism. EMAJ bridges the gap between young media-makers of the Euro-Mediterranean. We build on the ever-growing network enthusiastic young professionals whose aim is to produce high quality news from both sides of the Mediterranean.

EMAJ 2012 is a ten-day high-quality training course focused on the theme “Social Media in a Changing World”. During EMAJ, participants will experience and experiment Intercultural Journalism built around the concept of dialogue and mutual understanding.

New media have revolutionized communications. Offering higher interactivity, quicker reports, easy access to powerful and ever-growing social networks, these media constitute today new and exciting tools in journalistic practice.

EMAJ 2012 aims to provide high-quality training on new media in addition to inspiration and possibilities to reflect on the role of these technological innovations. As new media have played an important role in promoting social, political and economic change in many countries of the Euro-Mediterranean, the Academy will look at the insights of communication processes that occur through these tools.

Programme

The programme of the Academy will be divided into a theoretical and a practical section. Through training sessions and expert lectures on relevant topics in the field of New Media, Journalism, and Intercultural Dialogue and discussions of the role of media, the participants will decide on a media product and develop a common editorial line. In inter-regional teams the participants will be confronting each other’s different views, approaches and cultural backgrounds, working together on a common story.

The final outcomes will be published in a special edition of EMAJ Magazine and will constitute the basis of the printed report of EMAJ2012.
